Does anyone know what occurs in the body when one places his or her face in a bowl of cold water and holds their breath?

The human body is complex and competent beyond human comprehension.

Could someone hypothetically sleep in cold water to lower their heart rate? I know how important it is for someone to have a low bpm close to/and during sleep

not in cold water. but cooler room.
In Brazil it's a well known practice to sleep with your blanket not covering your feet. So that it helps with your body temperature and makes going to sleep much easier.
