I love when Dr. Huberman discusses the approach/avoidance/neutrality triad and it's put such more apropos as yum/yuck/meh especially in modernity. As a fledgling neuroscience student I just really appreciate these conversations and can't wait for the summer semester to get started. Let's goooooooo

Being vulnerable to learn is the ability to unfold a new level of character and challenges that can lead you to new realms of relationships

Would you consider an ep on Retinitis Pigmentosa? It runs in my family and no Dr has been able to advise on the carriers experience, I don’t display typical symptoms like the affected family members but there is some form of dystrophy going on.

Why do we bring on actual expert to humor like a psychologist, cognitive scientist or even sociologist who has dedicated their life to understand the try science behind comedy. This is just a plug for your cousin who I do enjoy reading myself but nowhere near what I’d consider a renowned expert on this. Just a very good comedian.

I trust a comedian to understand comedy better than a scientist. They learn things intuitively rather than studies which are hard to design and draw conclusions from

interesting perspective and I don’t disagree but comedy is rather subjective and science isn’t

Bizarre statement to be honest if you've read it. If you haven't I recommend it highly, very fascinating science grounded discussion, not at all what I was expecting. Tom is exactly the guy to bring on for this as he's able to have a serious discussion and has thought deeply about these topics that Andrew brings up, he's not just trying to be funny the whole time.

what exactly is bizarre about my comment??? In all honesty i have not read it but may consider after your rec; However, I agree tom is probably one of the few comedians to actually take this discussion seriously Ill revert back to my other sentiments in that Toms view is subjective if we have an n=1 without any sort of true scientific research here. I’ll be it, he’s obviously well intuned with the space and very connected but this all just seems like a family helping family to get more exposure. If this is truly for scientific purpose than why not give exposure to someone like Rod A Martin or Deborah Tannen to those who dedicate their lives to these question with strict and regulated methods.

Comedy, while an art, isn’t purely subjective. It has measurable psychological and linguistic components like timing, word choice, and audience response can be studied scientifically. Research in psychology shows how humor activates reward centers in the brain, and linguistics analyzes how syntax or phrasing enhances comedic effect. A professional in these fields could break down why certain jokes land, much like color theory explains why specific hues evoke emotions in paintings, as noted with marketing studies (red for urgency, blue for calm, etc). You dismiss this, implying comedy is too subjective for analysis, but that oversimplifies it. A scientist discussing color theory doesn’t dictate a painting’s quality but provides insight into why it resonates with people and same with comedy. Inviting Huberman’s cousin, a comedian, prioritizes personal perspective over rigorous analysis, which a psychologist or linguist could better provide for a science-based podcast. Do you know what I’m talking about now?!

Great episode! Side note: Art history was the first college course I took. Life changing and totally opened my eyes to appreciating different styles and artists. I'm almost 47 and I still have my gigantic textbook on my coffee table ❤

One of the elements of humor is surprise. Remove the surprise at the end of the joke because you have heard and know the surprise--- then it's no longer funny.

Came here for this.
I'm also too poor to read this. It would cost me my whole life savings just for a few minutes to hear Tom's witty genius.
